PRESS RELEASE: Castries, Saint Lucia (January 31, 2018): The official programme of activities to mark the celebration of Saint Lucia’s 39th Independence Anniversary was officially unveiled during a soft launch held at the studios of the National Television Network (NTN) on Wednesday January 31, 2018. Wednesday’s launch took the form of a press briefing and was an opportunity to provide details on the many planned activities to be hosted in a number of communities throughout the island. These activities have been organized to cater to families, local and national organisations, and educational and religious institutions.
In his welcome remarks, Chairman of the National Standing Independence Advisory Committee and Permanent Secretary in the Department of Local Government and Culture, Donovan Williams, spoke of the theme against which all the planned activities would be held.
“As in 2017, the theme of “I AM SAINT LUCIA” has been applied to our celebration of our 39th Independence Anniversary. This is a theme that engages people and because of the positive reception received and the sense of national pride engendered, we thought it absolutely necessary to bring forward the sentiments conjured into our commemoration this year.” PS Williams continued, “The calendar of activities being presented today is only a snapshot of the full schedule which is as diverse as we are as a people and as a nation. Activities span all regions of the island and are representative of all of our peoples and their cultures.”
Also present at the Wednesday January 31 launching, Senator the Hon. Fortuna Belrose, Minister for Local Government and Culture, once again urged the gathering, and by extension, Saint Lucians, to reflect on the seriousness and significance of the occasion of our independence. Speaking from the NTN Studios, the Minister asked that Saint Lucians embrace and participate in the many planned activities as a show of support and national pride.
Among the activities planned for this year are a number of sporting events including the National Independence Table Tennis Tournament, the Independence Day Cycling Championship, the Independence Challenge Walk and the Saint Lucia Moto X Club Super Moto Event.
The Prayer, Praise and Worship Celebration to bring together persons from all denominations and beliefs is once more being held, this time as a two-day activity on February 17 and 18.
February 18-24 has officially been designated as National Colours week with other major activities including the Prime Minister’s Grand Independence Ball, a continuation of the exciting “The Best of Saint Lucia” and the Independence Dash Colour Run. This year will also see the involvement of the Events Company of St. Lucia Inc., the body charged with the execution of most major national events.
Activities to celebrate Saint Lucia’s 39th Independence anniversary will take place from January 31 to March 26, 2018.
