The community with the highest number of people competing will be dubbed the ‘most health conscious community for 2018.’
The Let’s Move St. Lucia Challenge is a response to the rising incidence of chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, cancer and obesity, in St. Lucia.
The World Health Organisation has sited inactivity and being overweight as primary risk factors for the development of chronic diseases.
The average St. Lucian spends hours sitting at work, while commuting to and from work, at home in front of the TV, and while surfing the web. This translates into a significant amount of inactive time, which significantly increases the risks of being overweight and developing chronic diseases.
During the Let’s Move St. Lucia Challenge, iKaria Wellness is challenging all St. Lucians to break the cycle of inactivity by aiming to walk 10,000 steps a day.
The aim of the challenge is to generate awareness that sedentary lifestyles are unhealthy, and to start a movement which will motivate St. Lucians to move more and sit less.
All St. Lucians, are encouraged to participate.
