Castries South MP, Dr. Ernest Hilaire, says the two COVID-19 deaths Saint Lucia has recorded represent a game changer.

And he believes the country needs to take more drastic action.

“I think the deaths are a real game changer because we have had a few cases in the beginning,” Hilaire told reporters

He asserted that the recent spike in COVID-19 cases here raised the possibility of persons succumbing to the virus.

“I think we need to take more drastic action,” Hilaire said.

“Whereas we supported, we recognised the necessity to open up the economy and make sure we did not allow it to go into a free fall, we now need to consider whether we have to balance that with a more cautious approach,” the Castries South MP declared.

“Whether or not it is not more important for us to put in place more stringent measures, more expenditure on COVID-related health matters and less emphasis on putting up the economy,”  Hilaire told reporters.

He made it clear that he was not saying Saint Lucia should not ensure that its economy survives and is sustainable.

But according to the MP, right now with the government’s approach, there’s an ‘over emphasis’  on visitor arrivals, tourists coming in and an extensive effort to convince Saint Lucians that the tourists coming in is no threat.

However he explained on the basis of probability and some of the protocols currently in place, it is likely.

Hilaire said instead, the government is seeking to push a narrative that it was an SLP march that caused the spread of the virus.

“The only way it could have spread is if it was there in the first place,” the MP asserted.

“I think right now, we would place more emphasis on the COVID management response and a lot less emphasis on resources and attracting more flights and more tourists coming in,” he said in regard to what a labour administration would do.
