Newly appointed Tourism Minister, Dr. Ernest Hilaire, has disclosed that under the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) administration, a new look will be taken at this country’s vital tourism industry.
Hilaire was assigned responsibility for Tourism, Investment, Creative Industries, Culture and Information when the new Cabinet of Ministers was sworn in last week.
He described the areas for which he has been assigned responsibility as being really critical to the SLP’s plan to transform Saint Lucia and put people first.
“I think you will see a certain direction in keeping with our approach of always putting people first and causing people-centred development, so in tourism we will take a new look at tourism. We will want to promote community participation, people participation – ensuring that tourism is more than just figures, but is also about the earnings for the people of Saint Lucia,” Hilaire told reporters.
The Castries South MP said creative industries will be a big area for the new labour administration and one into which a lot of energy will be put.
In terms of investment, he explained that in the last few years that area has been ‘notorious’ for favouring foreigners and not being in the best interest of Saint Lucia.
“So you will see an alignment of those portfolios with the stated approach of the Saint Lucia Labour Party of putting people first,” Hilaire declared.
“I certainly want to bring forward all my experiences, locally, regionally and internationally in those areas and to create that critical role which the government sees those agencies and other areas as performing,” he disclosed.
Hilaire asserted that in Guibion Ferdinand, he has been assigned a Parliamentary Secretary dedicated to the task of putting people first and who would lend all his experience for them to work as a team to ensure that the ministry provides the transformational pivot that Saint Lucia needs.
