Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) Candidate for Soufriere, Emma Hippolyte, has written to the Mayor of Soufriere urging access to public bathrooms at Palmiste, Soufriere, by underprivileged and impoverished residents.
In the July 13, 2020 letter, Hippolyte observed that the residents do not have access to running water and proper bathrooms in their homes.
She noted that there has been minimal use of the bathroom facilities because the residents have been required to pay to use them and are unable to do so.
“Two of the facilities are currently under lock and key,” the former government Minister pointed out.
According to Hippolyte, it is unfair to ask such impoverished individuals to pay to perform their ‘routine ablutions’.
“As a result of the washrooms being inaccessible, some residents of the area have resorted to disposing of their waste in the open drains,” the former Gros Islet MP explained.
“We are therefore requesting that the two public bathrooms be re-opened and all washrooms be made available for the use of the residents at no charge,” Hippolyte wrote in the letter that was copied to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Equity.
