Jamaica: Former Moravian Minister Awarded $16m In Lawsuit

Jamaica Observer:–  KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former Moravian Minister Dr Canute Thompson was this morning awarded $16 million in his defamation lawsuit that was filed against Latoya Nugent, co-founder of the women’s advocacy group Tambourine Army.

The lawsuit was filed after Nugent allegedly posted comments on Facebook defaming Thompson shortly after another Moravian Minister, Rupert Clarke, was arrested for having sex with two sisters under the age of consent.

Clarke was sentenced to 16 years hard labour. The sentence is to be served concurrently, which means Clarke will spend eight years in prison.

One of the attorneys representing Thompson, Carlton Williams, told OBSERVER ONLINE that his client was initially seeking between $19 million and $20 million adding that Nugent defamed his client “without any basis and having known that she could not prove it, did not challenge the issue”.
