Jamaica: Pastor on rape charge offered bail

Jamaica Observer: ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — The Manchester-based pastor who was charged with rape and having sexual knowledge of a person under 16 has been offered bail in the sum of J$800,000 with one or two sureties.

Robert Clarke, 64, a longstanding minister of the Moravian Church, was granted bail when the matter was brought up in the St Elizabeth Parish Court on Wednesday.

As a condition of his bail, he is to report to the Mile Gully Police Station every Saturday between the 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. A stop order has also been placed on him and he was ordered to surrender his travel documents.

The allegations are that about 9:00 pm on December 28, a motorized police patrol in the deep-rural community of Austin in Myersville, south east St Elizabeth, close to the Alpart plant in Nain, came upon a parked car in a secluded area. Further inspection revealed the pastor and a 15-year-old in what the police described as a “compromising position”.

Investigators said last week that they were following further leads as a result of allegations that the pastor may have been involved in similar situations, previously.
