Former Saint Lucia Prime Minister Stephenson King has described as ‘just’, calls that have been made by civil society for consultation on the controversial COVID-19 Protection and Control Bill.

“I think it’s a just call,” he said.

” Civil society ought to be involved every step of the way in as far as the direction of the country,” King said in an interview with HTS News.

The ruling party MP felt that when it comes to legislation, it is obvious that civil society would need to participate.

King expressed the view that Saint Lucia has a very strong civil society.

“There are many organisations and institutions and of course the political parties – all are interested in the direction of this country,” he stated.

He told HTS News that the legislature is designed to provide that level of adequate consultation.

King asserted that it is not always comfortable when a government has to ‘bulldoze’ legislation in one sitting of the house.

“It is not adequate and it is very uncomfortable,” he declared.

He said he would not condemn civil society for calling out loudly for consultation.

“It is only unfortunate that at the very last minute the bill had to be put through, taking into consideration some of what was being attempted to achieve in the protocols and other arrangements which existed in the fight against COVID during the period of the state of emergency,” the Castries North MP observed.

He expressed the hope that as Saint Lucia moves forward, politicians would take note of those shortcomings and not attempt to compromise the democracy, but ensure public participation.
