The Minister for Tourism, Information and Broadcasting, Culture and Creative Industries and Parliamentary Representative for Anse La Raye/Canaries, Hon. Dominic Fedee, recently told the House of Assembly that Cabinet had taken a major decision that would redound to the benefit of Saint Lucians.

Hon. Fedee announced that lands at Anse Jabet in Canaries are being set aside for local investment only.

“For the first time in the history of tourism development there will be a dedicated tourism zone, so that all Saint Lucians can go to beachfront property, and buy a piece of land with infrastructure already installed,” he said. “The lands have been vested to Invest Saint Lucia and I look forward to the creation of over 500 new Saint Lucian-owned tourism businesses.”

Minister Fedee said that over the years, local interest in the tourism sector has grown immensely.

“Statistics show that there are over 4000 H plates mostly within car rental and tour companies facilitating the pre-COVID tourism boom. Meanwhile, the National Conservation Authority (NCA), has issued unprecedented levels of licenses to small boat operators, beach chair vendors, craft vendors, and other self-employed persons within the tourism industry. Thanks to the hard-working staff at the Ministry of Tourism, there are many more Saint Lucians today, who have received concessions under the Tourism Incentive Act than ever before in the history of this country.”

The Minister said such developments are due to government’s vision of bringing the tourism industry to the people of Saint Lucia.
