Lax gun laws and the fallout from the IMPACS probe have contributed to bolder criminals.
So says a law enforcement official.
The official spoke to St Lucia Times on condition of anonymity.
This after photos of men with firearms, including a high powered rifle, appeared on social media.
As a result, police are investigating.
However, officers say they believe that the men with the guns are part of a well-known clan from Vieux Fort.
“The chickens have come home to roost,” a law enforcement official stated.
“These guys are brazen. We need to enact laws that give the police the advantage,” the official told St Lucia Times.
The official said that people must not believe that the police are at the mercy of criminals.
The official also referred to the IMPACS probe.
“Eight years on and there’s no resolution,” the law enforcement official explained.
According to the official, the police officers who were involved in Operation Restore Confidence (ORC) were some of the’ best and bravest’ in the police force.
The police launched ORC in response to an unprecedented wave of homicides and violent crime between 2008 and 2010.
But the official lamented that the ORC officers are now in ‘institutional prison.
The official explained that they are not getting promotion.
The official said people also treat them as villains.
“The police officers are now more wary,” the official declared.
But the official warned that sooner or later there could be a clash between law enforcement officers and criminals who have high powered rifles.
