Lionel Ellis wants convicted rapists to be castrated

Amid a national outcry over a spate of rapes, well known Saint Lucian citizen – Lionel Ellis, has called for convicted rapists to be castrated.

Ellis, who  is the current Chairman of the Babonneau Branch of the ruling United Workers Party (UWP), in making the call, made it clear that he was speaking as a private citizen and not on behalf of any political party.

“The fact is that we have been experiencing a series of rapes and the laws not only in Saint Lucia but the Caribbean don’t seem to send a strong enough message to these perpetrators,” Ellis told the Times.

According to him, a jail term does not “cut it.”

Ellis asserted that people are prepared to go to jail and serve time.

He expressed the view that something more serious should be done with persons convicted of rape, whether involving a minor or adult.

Ellis said that rape should be dealt with in the most severe way in Saint Lucia and the Caribbean.

“When that is done and an example is set, then we will see the results – but we keep on talking about rape until thy kingdom come,” he observed.

Asked about the likely ramifications of such a move on this country’s reputation and its standing with its international friends, Ellis said:

“Tell our international friends to go to Saudi Arabia and deal with those people over there before they come to these little Islands where we are most strongly affected.”

Ellis spoke in the aftermath of a story that the Times broke yesterday, in which a ten year old girl was allegedly raped by a man believed to be in his thirties.

The alleged incident occurred shortly before noon yesterday when the girl was left alone in a shop while her guardian went on an errand.

The alleged perpetrator is reported to have been arrested by the Police.
