Mangal: People voted against Kenny and SLP

Former Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) candidate, Timothy Mangal, has asserted that the outcome of the last general elections was more of a vote against SLP leader and then Prime Minister, Doctor Kenny Anthony.

“I think it was a vote against the leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister of Saint Lucia and his policies,” Mangal told the Times.

He said coming to the end of the election campaign, the then opposition United Workers Party (UWP) which won the poll, put in a united team.

Mangal asserted that the UWP also had a good campaign at the end.

He expressed the view that primarily, the electorate voted against the government of the day.

The former SLP candidate felt it was more a vote against the government than for the UWP, which won the elections by a margin of 11 to 6.

In Mangal’s estimation, the ratio of the vote against the government was about sixty percent, while the margin for the UWP was about forty percent.

He told the Times that the way the electorate voted came as no surprise.

“I predicted a minimum of 10 -7 in favour of UWP and a maximum of 12-5. Those I thought were on the borderline were Soufriere and Dennery North, “the businessman, who supported the UWP while it was in opposition, said.

He recalled that the UWP won Soufriere and did not win Dennery North.

“What became a surprise to me was the margin of victory in every seat, which shows that there was a total swing away from the labour party,” Mangal declared.
