Martinique officials are reporting decreased seismic activity at the Island’s Mount Pelée Volcano but they remain on the alert, local reports say.
Since December 4,officials issued a Yellow Alert for the volcano due to an increase of seismic activity there.
Yellow is the third level of vigilance on a scale that has 5.
The next step is the pre-alert in orange, then the alert in red.
However RCI Martinique reports that on Christmas Day, information from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Martinique indicated decreased seismic activity since December 18, 2020.
Nevertheless the Yellow Alert remains, according to the online publication.
The Martinique Volcanological and Seismological Observatory is working in collaboration with scientists from Guadeloupe and Paris to closely monitor and analyse seismic data from Mount Pelée.
The volcano became infamous for a catastrophic eruption in 1902 which destroyed the town of Saint Pierre.
The explosion snuffed out the lives of some 30,000 people in the space of a few minutes.
