Martinique Issues Phone Scam Alert

Martinique authorities have sounded a warning to citizens to be on the alert against a new phone scam.

Local reports say someone calls a subscriber’s phone number and lets the phone ring only once.

But once the subscriber calls back, he or she incurs charges.

As a result, officials have warned citizens to be wary of returning missed calls.

They say there has been an upsurge in the missed call scam in recent months.

And although the phone scam has been around for years, Martinique authorities have disclosed that crooks are using new tricks to take advantage of the unwary.

By way of example, they said when a subscriber calls back, a voice tells them that they have won a voucher or a gift.

Once the unwary subscriber falls for the ruse and calls a designated number, the operator tries to keep them on the line for as long as possible.

In his way, the crooks are able to earn as much money as they can with each call that the unwary subscriber makes.
