A mentally ill man attacked and robbed Roman Catholic Bishop, Francis Alleyne, as the clergyman presided over Mass in Guyana last week, local reports say.

The man is reported to have been armed with a sharp object when he walked up to Alleyne and a Deacon of the church at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Georgetown.

According to Demerara Waves online, the man  grabbed the Bishop’s right hand and dragged off a ring before grabbing two other items including the Mass Book.

Both clergymen continued with the mass, although sources were quoted as saying that they were both shaken by the incident which unfolded on Facebook.

The incident was condemned  by several people who posted comments on the Catholic Media Guyana Facebook page.

One person individual questioned whether the intruder was indeed of unsound mind.

“Mentally ill? How he knew to go for the Bishop’s ring? A good lash would have brought him to his senses!” Wrote Sapodilla Michelle Brown.
