Minister addresses issue of police crime response

National Security Minister, Hermangild Francis, has been addressing the issue of the police response to crime.

Francis said the vehicle fleet that the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) has  is outdated.

“It is over ten, fifteen years that they have not been given any assistance when it comes to mobility,” the former Deputy Police Commissioner told reporters Monday.

Francis said Prime Minister Allen Chastanet has agreed to make the police as mobile as possible.

He explained that this will result in a quicker response time.

In response to a question about access of the media to crime scenes, Francis said it was a ‘ticklish situation.’

“I think we need to get some experts to meet with the press and the police,” Francis stated.

He disclosed that members of the media must understand that if they venture too close to the scene, they may tamper with evidence.

“There must be a balance between the distance you can get and the cooperation that you would get from the police,” the Minister observed.

He said if journalists respect the ‘distance’ that the police have given to them, he is certain there would be no difficulty.

“We want the news reported – we want everybody to know what is happening in this country,” Francis asserted, adding that the police are not against having members of the media present.

However he noted that sometimes members of the media want to get a little too close and become excited.

“That is where the friction comes in,” the former police officer said.
