Saint Lucia’s Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs has reported a ‘noted increase’ in the uptake of vaccines over the last month.

In a statement on Tuesday, National Immunisation Manager Tecla Jn Baptiste described the development as very encouraging, particularly amid reports of a steady rise of COVID-19 cases and associated deaths.

“This demonstrates an appreciation for the health benefit of the vaccine by our citizens, as well as the need to take personal responsibility to protect self and loved ones,” Jn Baptiste stated.

“As the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs strengthens its community outreach to ensure that vaccines are accessible to all, we continue to engage external partners such as the commercial sector and other health facilities to offer vaccines. COVID-19 vaccines are available at all Wellness centers on selected days. Citizens are encouraged to contact their nearest Wellness centers to access the vaccine,” she stated.

Jn Baptiste observed that COVID-19 has no respect for a person, gender, age, or socio-economic status and can affect anyone differently.

“We know that people with underlying chronic non-communicable diseases are particularly vulnerable to severe and fatal COVID-19 infection. A special appeal is being made to persons living with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and respiratory disease. The COVID-19 vaccines are effective in reducing the risk of the severe form of the disease, hospitalisation, and death,” the National Immunisation Manager observed.

As of Monday 27th September 2021, 45,245 first doses and 31,520 second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine had been administered inclusive of both the AstraZeneca and Pfizer BioNTech vaccines, Jn Baptiste disclosed.

She added that 17.4% of the population had received the complete regimen of the vaccine.
