PRESS RELEASE: The Mon Repos Youth and Sports Council will be hosting its 29th Annual Independence Road Relay on Sunday 18 February 2018. The eight leg relay will begin at the Mamiku/Praslin Junction from 7:00am and go on to the Helene Gap on the Desruisseaux/Vieux Fort Highway and then back on to the Patience Playing Field. The Prize-Giving Ceremony will be held after along with side attractions including performers such as Ezra “The FunMachine,” T-Mob, Yung Vic & Multi (2nd Place Winners of Youthfest 2017), Team Party and 5-a-side football competitions along with other athletics fun games.

The relay is open to any team of 8 persons who can register under the categories of: Open, Affiliates and School. Over the years the Road Relay has grown in numbers of participants and spectators. Regular competitors have included teams from neighbouring island of Martinique, Road Busters from Castries, El Nino Athletics Club of Desruisseaux, Affiliates of the Mon Repos Youth and Sports Council including the Patience Youth Organisation (PYO), Grass Street Youth and Sports Club, Young Strikers Sports Club, Lombard Youth and Sports Club, La Pointe 4H; Schools such as the Boys Training Centre, Micoud Secondary School, Anse Ger Secondary School, to name a few. 2017’s relay was won by Team Endurance, a combined effort of male athletes from Mon Repos and Martinique under the leadership of long distance runner Winsbert Sylvester.

This year’s event is possible through the generosity of a number of supporters and partners such as LUCELEC, Micoud North Constituency Council, National Lotteries Authority of Saint Lucia, Blue Waters, Real Foods Inc., Goddard Catering, the Department of Youth and Sports, Courageous People, the People of Mon Repos and the Windward & Leeward Brewery among others.

The Mon Repos Youth and Sports Council wishes to thank everyone who has contributed to this enduring event. We look forward to a grander celebration in 2019 when we will be celebrating the thirtieth (30) run of the Relay.
