More Saint Lucians Hired As Farm Workers In Canada

Press Release:- More opportunities have been secured for Saint Lucians to gain employment under the Canadian Seasonal Agricultural Farm Workers Programme.

The latest batch of fifty-two (52) workers are now all set to take up employment in Canada, following an orientation exercise held on Wednesday July 8, 2020.

Organised by the Department of Labour, the orientation exposed the workers to what they should expect when they arrive in Canada, importance of team work and deportment and the basic do`s and don`ts.

In his address to the gathering Labour Minister Hon. Stephenson King encouraged the workers to be quality Ambassadors for Saint Lucia.

According to Minister King, the performance of the individual workers may result in the creation of fresh opportunities for even more Saint Lucia.

More Saint Lucians Become Farm Workers In Canadahe group of 52 Saint Lucian men will leave the island on July 15, via special charter and will be employed on farms in various Provinces for a maximum of eight months.

All workers signed commitment contracts and will undergo two weeks mandatory Quarantine upon arrival in Canada.

The Government of Saint Lucia thanks the Canadian Authorities, the Eastern Caribbean Liaison Office (ECLS), the Farm Owners and other partners for their commitment in making this opportunity possible.

  1. It is better to work and to earn to help oneself at a time such as this, its not slavery.
the difference to many, when work is not available in the Islands, you either steal &
perhaps get into trouble or accept what is available to you as a means of survival.
If you are smart, then jump at the opportunity, work & save some money for hard times.

  2. @Pablo – this is not any new venture, and neither is it “slavery” – as the farmers get PAID, get HEALTH SERVICES, get ROOM AND BOARD, and are free to GO ON A LIME!!! Keep your negativity to yourself, your fingers and your keyboard. I well wish I could go to better myself.

I noticed that this Farming in Canada seems to be gender based. Are women farmers (they are the best out there) considered?

    • ….WOULD YOU HAVE ACCEPT ??? HELL NO. WOULD YOU SEND YOUR CHILDREN ?? HELL NO. One you are been sold for labour it’s call SLAVERY and the government is SELLING THEM to the highest bidder young black men no other kind. No other race . Stay home and do your own farming than die a slave. I ask again what’s the kickback if the government can show me that then I will gladly apologized but this will never happen

  3. Some of you truly do not know the meaning of slavery. There is dignity in labour. It does not matter what job you do. St lucia has people starving. I would not discourage anyone who wants to go to the Canada farms to work and earn a wage. Sitting down in Stucia awaiting hotels to open will not earn you a wage. People should let others make their own decisions, especially when you do not know what they have to go through to eat a meal.

  4. The same ppl who will leave St. Lucia go the US to do all demeaning jobs under the table to show off on facebook that they are in the US. Some ppl just want to use words, disrupt livelihoods. Everything for Lucians all of a sudden is slavery. Ppl who have been cultured on a habit of handouts and freeness. Why don”t you guys seek to be gainfully employed. FARMING does provide jobs and honest earning for ppl who want to survive. Ignorance is bliss, my ppl wake up, think for yourself.

  5. AGREE TO THAT, IF ONLY YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT SLAVERY WAS HMMM.THE FARM WORKERS GET ROOM, FOOD, EXPERIENCE, THEY ARE NOT CHAINED AND BITTEN NOR STARVED, THEY COOK IN THEIR OWN KITCHEN SLEEP IN THEIR BEDS, WATCH THEIR OWN 40 INCH FLAT SCREEN. EARN A GOOD PAY CHECK, AND AFTER 8 MONTHS THEY GO BACK HOME, NOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT. I CALL THAT BEING A MAN TAKING RESPONSIBILITY AND TAKING CARE OF THEM SELVES AND FAMILY. I LIVE IN CANADA NOW FOR 35 YEARS, I HAVE BEEN TO PURCHASE FRUITS AND VEGGIES FROM THOSE FARMS, AND NOTHING IS BETTER THAN FRESH PRODUCE FROM THE FRAM, ESPECIALLY MY PEOPLE THAT TAKE CARE AND PICK THEM.

    • …..you OVER GROWN JACKASS you chatting nothing but crap ! Yes they may have the “MODERN AMENITIES” our ancestors did not have and they were not pack into the belly of ships like sardines the mare fact THAT THEY ARE SOLD OR EXCHANGE BY ONES GOVERNMENT FOR THEIR LABOUR EQUATES TO SLAVERY. Again I ask what’s the KICKBACK BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT OF ST LUCIA AND CANADA ??? WHAT IS IT ???????? Whatever it is or how little it is they are SOLD OR EXCHANGE for their labor and THAT IS WHAT IS CONSIDERED SLAVERY. Bway I don’t know St Lucians just I don’t know them…… Canada is right next door to the US why have they not recruit young Black men from their to work in their field ??? The unemployment rate amongst African Americans are twice that of White Americans, WHY NOT ?? I rest my case.

  6. Lucian Highgrade it looks as though you have no work to do but to just go through comments based on every article and respond to everyone of them. Why don’t you enroll in the Canadian farm program and engage yourself in some productive work. And by the way you seem not to know the meaning of slavery. Slaves are not paid for their labour. They are forced to work and have no freedom.
These farm workers earn high wages for their work. I have a cousin who has been working in this program for about five years and has saved enough to construct a decent house. Had it not been for this program he would probably be here struggling to survive.
I guess if all of this was happening under an SLP administration you would have considered it the best thing that ever happened in St.Lucia. But under this administration you consider it to be Slavery. SMH

  7. @Lucian Highgrade … pandering to his own ignorance. If I were given the opportunity to work as a FARM HAND on a farm overseas, I would ditch everything and go. If I were given the opportunity to work as a PAINTER for a construction company overseas, I would ditch everything and go. If I were given the opportunity to work to fix boats and other sea transportation for a boating company overseas, i would ditch everything and go. These and other jobs pay BIG MONEY!!

You see Lucian Highgrade, my room, board, food, transportation would be PAID for me, and I would still be making $$$ to come back home with – that is called a SALARY. How can that be “SLAVERY”?? Please enlighten me.
