Moses Jn Baptiste, the MP for Vieux Fort North, has condemned Sunday morning’s arson attack on the Catholic church at Pierrot, Vieux Fort.
Jn Baptiste also praised individuals who apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police.
“We cannot tolerate anyone who does not want to respect the right of others to worship,” the MP told a virtual market steps meeting of the opposition Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) on Sunday night.
“We cannot tolerate this in our constituency or anywhere else in Saint Lucia,” he asserted.
Jn Baptiste said at the same time he wished to call on the authorities to give assistance to troubled youth.
“This gentleman is a very troubled young man and he needs assistance and at the same time justice must be done,” he declared.
The police have arrested a man from Aupicon, Vieux Fort in connection with the arson attack.
The man was caught on tape setting fire to a statue outside the church by throwing a home made incendiary device at it.
The fire died out shortly afterwards.
The suspect is later reported to have been held by churchgoers as he entered the place of worship.
He is reported to have had other incendiary devices in his possession.
