Health and Wellness Minister Mary Isaac has announced that the mother of an abandoned newborn has come forward to the authorities.
“The mother came forward – the real mother, we believe, came forward and she is getting the necessary attention,” Isaac told reporters Thursday.
Asked whether it had been confirmed that it was the real mother, Isaac’s response was:
“Well, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I have not seen the mother and I don’t know who the mother is, but the hospital informed me that we made a plea and then the mother came forward.”
According to Isaac, the baby is fine and has been placed in foster care.
The child was found abandoned at Morne Du Don earlier this month.
The newborn still had the umbilical cord attached.
According to one Morne du Don resident, someone heard the child crying, went to investigate and discovered the infant in a bag.
A heart-wrenching video of the discovery was posted on social media.
Another video, apparently recorded some time after the discovery, showed the child wrapped in a blanket atop a vehicle as young men from the community took charge of the situation.
An ambulance later took the child to hospital.
