Mold problems at General Post Office

Employees of the General Post Office  (GPO) on Bridge Street have revealed that a long standing problem of mold infestation in the building has now become a major health hazard.

Employee, Gabriel Albert Joseph said the response to the problem has always been to invite workmen to “scrape, paint and patch”.

But Joseph has said that the measures employed are against staff orders.

He explained that within the work environment are persons who suffer from asthma and bronchitis.

Joseph said as a result of being affected by the situation, some employees have had to proceed on sick leave.

“The last we had was that the shop steward and the union came in and they just watched it,’ he recalled.

According to Joseph, a health crew later visited the GPO and asked how the employees could work under such conditions.

He complained that the air conditioners circulate dust.

“I believe the time is right for the minister or whoever is responsible to know what is going on here – it’s not easy. You ask for dust masks – they don’t have. You have to purchase your own dust masks to wear, come to work and give the public the best that they can. It’s a shame,” Joseph declared.

He disclosed that the employees are being represented by the Saint Lucia Civil Service Association (CSA) which says it is awaiting a report on the situation.

“They  said until the report we must hold on, but they don’t understand what is going on,” Joseph stated, noting that the mold situation has been a problem for years.

He revealed that just today a female employee of the post office broke out in a skin rash.

“Who is going to foot her medical bill? Nobody!” Joseph stated.

He said all he was asking is for  the employees to get better conditions of work.

“Until the workers here take a stand and say enough is enough, this will go on,” Joseph said, adding that if the concerns of the workers are ignored, their next option is to stay away from work.
