New security measures at La Meynard Hospital in Martinique are being urged, after hooded gunmen kidnapped a wounded Saint Lucian national from the health care institution on Saturday night.
The victim had earlier sustained gunshot wounds in a separate incident and was receiving medical care.
Now, police are on the hunt to find him and his kidnappers.
But two unions representing Martinique health sector workers want the authorities to strengthen hospital security.
As a result trade union official, Magalie Zamor, has stressed the need for adequate measures when the hospital admits patients with gunshot wounds.
Martinique 1Ere quoted her as saying that she was in shock and disbelief over what transpired.
And the publication quoted another trade union leader, Jean-Pierre Jean-Louis, as citing the need for CCTV cameras that work.
He also asserted that there are care units for patients like the kidnap victim.
However La Meynard Hospital has said it’s law enforcement that decides where such a patient goes.
