Nicaragua Cuts Ties With Taiwan In Favour Of Beijing

BBC News:– Nicaragua has become the latest country to cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favour of China.

Taiwan said it was “deeply saddened”, adding that Nicaragua had “disregarded [their] many years of friendship”.

The decision was praised by China, which demands that any country that wants diplomatic relations with it must cut existing ties with Taipei.

It comes as the US State Department on Friday called for democracies to “expand engagement with Taiwan”.

Beijing sees Taiwan as a breakaway province to be reunified with the mainland one day. However, Taiwan sees itself as a democratically-governed, independent country, though it has never formally declared independence from the mainland.

Taiwan’s list of international allies has dwindled from 21 down to 14 since President Tsai Ing-wen took office in May 2016.

“Nicaragua today breaks diplomatic relations with Taiwan and ceases to have any contact or official relationship,” said Nicaragua’s foreign ministry, adding that it “recognises that there is only one single China”.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying praised Nicaragua’s decision, calling it the “right choice … in line with the global trend” adding that it “has people’s support”.

  1. We know what you all are doing in the Caribbean; trying to buy the place and colonise it to go against the Americans. We know all your plans. But those plans will fail. Just letting you know this. When the latin americans start nationalising all your investments like they have done against the Americans, you will realise that you people have no clue about those places. Your investments cant keep you in a country no matter what agreements you sign. This obtains only in peace time my friend and only if the country wants it to. So get off this darn board and report to your masters this sage advice; stop playing the old dollar games.

  2. I am not surprised by the reaction to the article, by the 3 comments above. The article is by the BBC, for heaven’s sake! Are you guys incapable of a single, independent, critical thought?

I would think that anyone with a minimum of 2 well-firing neurons would objectively examine why the collective will of the Nicaraguan impelled them to recognize China’s historic sovereignty with regards to Taiwan. The comments, above, speak to a glaring ignorance of both China’s & Nicaragua’s actual history; and it is not a history that starts immediately after their assimilation of the propagandistic swill from the City of London’s mouthpiece.

  3. After all that virus that spread everywhere??? what a stupid set a people! health before wealth. without the former the latter is meaningless.
