No School On Friday

The Department of Education, Innovation and Gender Relations has granted permission to members of the St. Lucia Teachers’ Union (SLTU) to attend a General Meeting on Friday June 14.

The Ministry has announced that as result, there will be no school.

An SLTU official told St Lucia Times that Friday’s meeting is to discuss negotiations with the government which have reached a ‘critical stage’.

The negotiations are for the period 2016 to 2019.

According to the SLTU official, the government gave a proposal which was ‘countered’ by the union.

The official said the discussion with its members on Friday is intended to help the SLTU to bring closure to the negotiations which had made ‘good progress’.

    • Teachers want money and students have exams now. They are making a bold statement customers be damned. Kinda stupid if you ask me. Any other business would ensure their customers receive good service regardless. To hell with those students’ futures. Funny enough those are the same teachers who constantly miss class throughout the term and get over 3 months vacation annually. They don’t realise they are shooting themselves in the foot. Soon enough the GovernmentS will have no choice but to start dismissing public workers. Just look over to Barbados as an example. IMF always recommends reducing spending. Firings is the easiest way to achieve that especially when your staff is not as productive as they could be.

  1. Anonymous first of you sound like an angry bitter human being who was greatgly affected by the fact that Friday had no school because teachers were summoned to meeting! Second of all, you sound even more bitter over the fact that teachers desire and rightfully DESERVE an increase. Thirdly, you sound like one of these typical St. Lucians who simply regurgitate the
Opinions of others who detest teachers. In addition to this, you claim that teachers are always absent throughout the term as if they are not humans too and they don’t fall sick and they don’t have families and they don’t have family emergencies too!!!!! More so, it seems that you are only jealous that your job only permits you to one or two weeks of vacation? Because even how much vacation time teachers get is affecting you? But point of correction: teachers only have summer vacation which is still interrupted by workshops. Easter and Christmas breaks are for the students and during this time they are called to workshops to which they are to attend! Further, do you see how much work teachers put in? Behind the scenes? After school? During their weekends?? So stop bashing teachers …they even take care of some of your very own offspring better than you possibly can in all domains! Get mad! Or go become a teacher !
