NWU pleased with proposed VAT reduction

The National Workers Union (NWU) is pleased with an announcement made by Prime Minister Hon. Allen M. Chastanet of a 2.5% reduction in the current fifteen percent (15%)  VAT regime.

The NWU is of the opinion that any form of economic relief for workers is well deserved and should go a long way in assisting workers and Saint Lucian consumers to deal with their domestic economic obligations.

The NWU did voice its opposition to the fifteen percent (15%) Value Added Tax and will continue to do so.  The Union is of the opinion that such measures as prescribed and recommended by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have inflicted much hardship and constant erosion of the salaries of lower paid workers in Saint Lucia.

The Government must frustrate efforts as much as possible at paying a few individuals huge $20,000.000 to $30,000.00 monthly wages and sharing fat gratuities to those who have completed three (3) year contractual stints.
