OECS hosts computer assisted survey training

GIS:-Computer surveys improve efficiency by enabling electronic data collection.

The OECS Commission has partnered with the Central Statistics Office in Saint Lucia to conduct training in Computer Assisted Personal Interviews (CAPI) Surveys for the BVIs, Montserrat and St. Kitts and Nevis, which is aimed at making the data collection process much easier when statisticians visit households.

Edwin St. Catherine, Director of St. Lucia’s Central Statistics Office, explained that the innovative training used Survey Solutions technology developed by the World Bank.

“It removes the need for paper questionnaires and replaces it with an electronic environment where we collect data on tablets. This also allows us to collect better data because we can ensure that all of the conditions for the flow of good data is enabled on the tablet while it is being collected.”

Mr St. Catherine added that the training will enhance the processes of all national statistical offices around the region.

“We have with us in Saint Lucia our colleagues from the BVI, Monserrat, and St. Kitts and Nevis joining us. Saint Lucia has three years of experience using this, in relation to the other statistical offices. We are sharing our experiences with them and hopefully they can then take a lot of this information which they have gotten through this collaboration back to their individual countries and implement the collection of data using tablets and the internet in a much more effective way.”

The training took place at the Central Statistics Office, Saint Lucia from May 29 to June 2.
