OECS to improve childhood education

The Education Development Unit develops a framework that will meet the needs of children from birth to five.

Sissera Simon, Education Program Coordinator of the OECS Education Development Management Unit, has stated that the key vision of the OECS Education Sector Strategy is to ensure that every child succeeds.

Mrs. Simon said the strategy focuses on improving education delivery regionally, within the 0-5 age group.

“One of the key imperatives of this strategy is early childhood education. The goal of this imperative is to ensure that we improve the quality of service delivery for children in the birth to five-year cohort,” she explained. “Thus far, we have undertaken a number of initiatives, and at the core is our role to facilitate the delivery of education services across the region.”

She outlined several achievements.

“I can highlight that under the early childhood component we have been able to record a number of successes. While a number of activities are still in progress, one of our goals was to improve data collection. There has been an improvement of data collection in the sector, although there are still a number of gaps.”

Mrs. Simon said OECS countries including Saint Lucia are now able to report provide basic data such as enrolment, gender, and teacher training.

“We have also been able to embark on an early childhood curriculum framework for the OECS. What we have found is that while some centres are using international best practices, others are using national curriculums. But in some instances there might not be any prescribed curriculum. So what we have sought to do is not to prescribe any particular curriculum, but instead provide a framework for the delivery of the curriculum that will meet the needs of the children of the birth to five.”
