Saint Lucia’s OKEU Hospital is investigating a report of a ‘wrong leg’ amputation.

According to the report, the hospital allegedly cut off a woman’s good leg by mistake.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Benson Emile, addressed the issue on Thursday.

He indicated that the Ministry is aware of the report.

As a result, Emile said OKEU Hospital is undertaking the necessary investigation.

The senior Health Ministry official explained that thereafter, officials will determine how to proceed.

However, Emile  said it’s anticipated that there would be ‘legal ramifications’.

“And  at some point our Attorney General will be getting involved in the process so as to make the proper representation for the government,” he stated.

Emile disclosed that the family and the OKEU management have been conversing and working together ‘to bring remedy to the entire event.’

“Those incidents may happen from time to time,” he asserted.

“But barring that we trust the clinical people at the hospital, we trust management at the hospital to deliver proper care to the public,” he said.

“The hospital is still a relatively safe place to administer health care service to the entire population,” Emile said.
