Ontario Minister Who Resigned Over Caribbean Vacation Denies Visiting Saint Lucia

Ontario Minister Rod Phillips who resigned over a recent trip to the Caribbean, denied ever being in Saint Lucia, media reports say.

The Toronto Sun reported Wednesday that the publication started asking questions last week after hearing rumours that Phillips was staying in Saint Lucia at a luxury resort.

It said on Monday, Phillips’ office said the minister denied ever being in St. Lucia and would not reveal where he went.

But he later admitted that he was in St. Barts.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the resignation of Phillips who took the trip to the Caribbean while the province remained under lockdown.

Mr Ford on Thursday said Mr Phillips’ departure showed his government “takes seriously our obligation to hold ourselves to a higher standard”.

Phillips apologised and called the travel a “dumb mistake”.

Phillips, who is a member of the Progressive Conservative Party, had taken a personal trip to St Barts on 13 December and returned on Thursday morning.
