An open letter to Sandals

Dear Butch,
Hi. I’m Mike and I just want to say sorry. I watch all my fellow brothers and sisters in the Caribbean, who just seem to love hating on you and your company, and I realise that the old saying is true; a prophet is never appreciated in his own land.

You have gone against the grain of what is expected of the Caribbean man, you have taken on the big boys who run things world-over and guess what? You have won. You have succeeded and you have risen, a Jamaican, a Caribbean man, to the head of your game. You are, like Usain Bolt, a champion who the rest of the world looks at and admires, but sadly, some of your own people are the ones who work hardest to drag you down.

But I want to say to say dear sir, have heart. I was reading an article the other day which I thought was so appropriate. The author says there is a direct correlation between the amount of success you enjoy and the number of haters you have.

It states that we need haters in our businesses, but we cannot get caught up on what critics say about our work. There’s value in haters — because they are an authentic reflection of our cultural norms, and sadly the fact is that haters are the norm.

The article went on to suggest that such criticism is self-hate turned outward, and is often a sign of weakness, envy and fear.Haters hate on you because you’re doing what they cannot, will not or are too afraid to attempt.

There is one way to avoid having haters. Sit on the sidelines, do nothing, don’t set goals, be average and no one will judge or hate you. However sir, I do not believe that is the Butch Stewart philosophy, nor the Sandals spirit.

So let me do something different today, let me say thank you.

Thank you for providing employment here in Saint Lucia and throughout the region. Thank you for the investment you have made and the money you spend. Thank you sir for not abandoning the Caribbean, because we know it would be so much easier to go Mexico or somewhere else and set up shop. But in spite of the fact that it is your own Caribbean people who sometimes say the worst things about you, you do what the good lord has asked us to do, you turn the other cheek, and work harder than ever so that those same critics are the ones that benefit.

Do not lose faith in the region sir, I for one am proud that we as a people can produce a Fortune 500 company, and that we and show the world what a Caribbean man can do!

Mikey Joseph

After this, I heard what sounded like a vast crowd in heaven shouting, “Praise the LORD! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God.”

    – Revelation 19: 1

  2. Mike, that’s very well said. And as the old people would say, let the critics put that in their pipe and smoke it!

  3. Blessings that is awesome. God will for ever bless you sir .just for reaching out to those that are in need. You have agreat blessing Coming toyou Much blessings.
