OPM official defends right to protest

Senior Communications Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), Nicole Mc Donald, has defended the right of citizens to protest.

“We understand that Saint Lucians have every right to protest,” Mc Donald said, adding that the Allen Chastanet administration welcomes opportunities to engage persons in discussion on various projects.

The OPM official spoke amid a controversy over criticism of Vieux Fort Parish Priest, Kevin Murray, by businessman Michael Chastanet, who is the father of Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet.

Murray has been among those protesting against the controversial DSH project.

The government has distanced itself from the comments of the older Chastanet, saying that the remarks were not indicative of the administration’s position or philosophy.

“The government has at all times maintained that ours is a free and democratic society and all are entitled to free speech in accordance with our laws,” Mc Donald said.

She explained that the government had received some ‘questions’ regarding Michael Chastanet’s comments which were made during his weekly television show aired on DBS Television.

Mc Donald said the government wanted to clarify that statements made in an individual’s ┬ápersonal capacity are not reflective of the position of the ruling administration.
