Press Release:–  The Leader of the Opposition in Saint Lucia and Political Leader of the Saint Lucia Labour Party, Hon Philip J. Pierre has renewed his Party’s commitment to establishing a Universal Health Care system in Saint Lucia.

In a televised National address to the Nation on Sunday 21st Feb, in observance of its 42nd Anniversary of Independence on 22nd February, Hon. Pierre said:

“The challenge of COVID has forcefully reminded us of the need for a first- class health care system that is accessible and affordable to all. This is why Universal Health Care will be a topmost priority for an SLP government.”

In previous statements on the healthcare situation in the country, which is now grappling with the highest number of COVID 19 cases and COVID related deaths in the Eastern Caribbean, Hon. Pierre had announced that the Saint Lucia Labour Party would continue the work it had started, when last in Government, on the establishment of a Universal Health care system.

This programme was halted by the current UWP Government when it came into office in 2016.

With regard to the COVID 19 pandemic, Hon Pierre urged the Government to be more
scientific minded in its approach to combating the virus.

“The Government, in formulating COVID policies, should follow the science and best practices to combat this disease and to bring it under control.”

He also renewed earlier calls on the Government to provide economic and social relief to those hardest hit by the disastrous economic impact of COVID 19.

“We must ensure that the people that have been hardest hit by COVID 19 receive the economic and social relief and support that has been made available from international financial institutions through loans and grants.

The taxi-drivers and mini buses, fisher folk, vendors, small business owners, and farmers still wait for much needed financial assistance. We must address their needs. They have families too, which depend on them. In this Covid battle, we should put people before profits, lives before livelihoods and health before wealth.”
