Members of the opposition Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) today staged a walkout of parliament, accusing the government of abusing parliamentary procedure.

At a news conference later, opposition leader Philip J. Pierre told reporters that the United Workers Party (UWP) administration is attempting to stifle this country’s democracy.

“The opposition will not be part of that,” Pierre stated.

He recalled that about eight weeks ago the member for Castries South, Doctor Ernest Hilaire, informed the Speaker of the House that  a negative motion would be tabled in the house asking it to negate the changes made by the government to the Citizenship by Investment (CIP) programme.

“We had discussions with the Speaker and all was in order,” Pierre told today’s new conference.

But the opposition leader noted that when the order paper was released for the  meeting of the house this morning,  it was observed that the matter of the motion by the member for Castries South has disappeared.

“It was there up to last night but this morning it disappeared,” Pierre noted.

He asserted that all the processes and procedures required for the laying of a motion in the house were met by the member for Castries South.

“The notice of six days was given and there was absolutely no reason why the motion should be removed from the order paper on the morning of  the sitting of parliament,” Pierre said.

He stated that the SLP believes  that the government is abusing its power.

Pierre said it was part of a pattern being followed by the current administration.

“You may have noticed the attack on reporters. You may have noticed the attack on private citizens. You may have noticed the attack of the Prime Minister calling people hypocrites and liars in public,” he said.

According to Pierre, the government always seems to be ‘deflecting’ facts.

“We believe that the government does not want the people of Saint Lucia to hear what they have done as far as the CIP programme is concerned. We believe that the changes in the CIP programme are a risk to  our national security,” he said.

The SLP leader said that his party believes members of the public should be aware of what the government intends to do and how many persons have been given Saint Lucian passports.

He said the SLP is of the view that that the government should give full disclosure on the reasons why it  did not want the people of the country to hear the debate on the CIP, even though all the procedures were followed.

“We will not be part of that and we intend to continue to show the people of Saint Lucia that this government is vindictive, dictatorial – it abuses power,” Pierre disclosed.

He asserted that if the UWP administration can behave in such a manner after less than one year in office, one can imagine what would happen when they are in power for a longer period of time.

Pierre declared that the opposition has been very tolerant and disciplined, allowing the government  to do what it has to do.

But he said the SLP believes the time has come when it has to take a stand to protect this country’s democracy, patrimony and people.

  1. oh shut up. you all bring that cip thing into our borders, now you all crying over every nonsense. now tell me, why is kenny trying to disrupt the country. kenny please go to trinidad

  2. Chastanet and his bunch have to go, as they are a disgrace to the people of st lucia what we need is a revoulution to drive away the capitalist who live in Rodney bay borne terre and cap estate and the chastanet and du boulay family courts with 45 percent interest rates foreign bank control by the so called jews insurance companies hotels (Words deleted)

  3. hooray for Pierre, finally he has the balls to talk. Pierre go. Btw all u should just stay out of parliament especially u.
    (Words deleted)

  4. That not new to anyone whenever they in opposition they all out as if st Lucia belongs to them.SMH

  5. wow pierre again being kenny’s puppet
please correct me if am wrong i don’t think i ever heard cip being debated in parliament while the slp was in office
i dont think i ever heard how many passports were sold
i cant remember hearing who got passports
so why is there a rush to debate
i remember clearly on news spin honest heliare was asked whether jufalie had a passport and he refused to answer
how many of us st lucians new of jufalie daughter had a St.Lucian passport
but now pierre and his bunch of goats wants the people of St.Lucia hear a debate on cip
i watched as they filled out of the house they look like the bunch of goats that this marchan man has every day leading to the marchand playing field to graze shouting ON A SIDE ON A SIDE

  6. Wow…vintage SLP
Anytime we are in opposition , no peace,
What a shame a party which did all secret deals ,trashed the constitution reform, called the G.G a ceremonial position, caused people to distrust the police with their lies, used Richard Frederick name as their toilet paper, poor jab,now he forgets…..

  7. If those idiots were in the interest of the people they would have never staged a walkout. A walkout is not a way to protest. Stay in the house and let your voice be heard. You were elected to represent the people in the house. It’s a shame that there are those who support those bunch of comedies, getting a salary for no representation.

    • But how would they be able to stay in the House and protest? The speaker would not allow this, and if they insisted, she would put them out. So, if they had stayed, they would have to remain like “moo-moos” and like “wavet duovant poule”.Clearly, the deck of cards is stacked against the Opposition. So it is always better to walk out than to run the risk of being named, which is a form of punishment, and suspended from a number of sittings, which is possible under the rules. I hope you get the point.

  8. Some of you here are real illiterate. You let party and colour fool you. What’s about our drowning country. Please review CIP and you will understand what the opposition is talking about. I’m not a supporter of neither party. I live in the UK but under the former government CIP was way better. Here in the UK persons are actually laughing @ this country. The prime minister is illiterate as well. I think the UWP should change their political leader. King was a much better prime minister, the country is dead from what I see only the rich benefits. People please look closer the division is not good it is destroying fair Helen. We need to come together as one. I pray that God abundantly bless this country and it’s people. Not forgetting things are done in a manner there are procedures for everything. If you cannot follow procedures then what .the prime minister is just power hungry and this is not good leadership. I’m putting wrong and right where it deserves to be. Smh at this country.

    • Please enlighten us how it was better under SLP? This was a (Word deleted) move by the opposition, the speaker said that it would have been debated just not in this sitting of the house but instead of giving the benefit of the doubt and waitfor the next sitting to really prove that the speaker is indeed behaving in a biased way they walk out as if to say ” how dare the speaker not do as we say”. This tatic reminds me of how the opposition in DA does it business unfortunately this has kept them in opposition for almost 20 years

      • But you see, there will NOT be another Sitting in this current session of Parliament. This session will come to an end in a few days, paving the way for a brand new session, with Throne Speech and all, and the start of the Budget Debates. So the motion that Helaire wanted to bring up is now dead, because it cannot be transferred to a new session, according to the rules. I hope you understand.

  9. So disgustingly that all the anonymous people who are bashing the Opposition for actually doing the right thing cannot even put their names behind their statements. BTW the CIP legislation was fully debated when introduced by the last administration. You’ll must begin to make decisions based on facts, than merely on political preferences. Educate your self as to what is right for Country not because a politician says so. Obviously there is a conflict of interest with the Speaker of the house and her husband heavily involved in the CIP program. So when the document disappeared from the order paper we must begin to ask the tough questions! What was discussed at the dinner table or in the bedroom the night before? If something doesn’t smell right, most often it’s not right.
