PAHO: Fake News Fuelling Vaccine Hesitancy

The Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) believes fake news is making people hesitate to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

But the organisation’s Director, Carissa F. Etienne, says vaccines are saving lives now.

As a result, Etienne has warned that vulnerable individuals who hesitate to take the jab can become one of the thousands who die daily due to COVID-19.

The PAHO Director acknowledged reports of very rare unexpected side effects from some COVID-19 vaccines.

However, Etienne told a press briefing that this should not make people hesitate.

“The vaccines delivered through COVAX have been thoroughly assessed by the WHO experts,” she disclosed.

And Etienne advised that the benefits of these vaccines outweigh the risks of side events.

Nevertheless, she indicated that unreliable information spreads quickly.

Therefore PAHO is collaborating with tech companies like Twitter, Google, and Facebook to address fake news, Etienne said.

She disclosed that together, they are seeking to ensure the public can easily find accurate information.

In the last week alone, the Americas reported more than 1.5 million new COVID cases.

And the region recorded nearly 40,000 deaths, according to PAHO.
