The Ministry of Education has announced that the physical reopening of educational institutions is set for Monday, April 19, 2021.

“Of paramount importance are the health and safety of students and staff and support staff,” a ministry statement on Thursday said.

As a result, the statement indicated that those concerns were integral in preparing the physical plant.

“Moreover, the Department of Education, Innovation and Gender Relations continues to rely on the guidance of the Ministry of Health and Wellness to ensure the classes are conducted in a safe environment,” it stated.

According to the statement, educational institutions will operate from Monday to Friday based on the established school hours.

It observed that some institutions will adopt the ‘whole school’ approach based on physical infrastructure and population.

However, the statement noted that 34 schools will operate using the ‘alternate day’ system.

It explained that a 6-day cycle will obtain.

The cycle will will provide at least days of face to face instruction to students, the statement observed.

But the ministry said that the authorities are not permitting mass crowd gatherings at this time.

And they are limiting sporting activities to small group physical engagement and non-contact sports.

The ministry statement encouraged educators to do prior preparation to ensure a smooth re-opening and delivery of classes at schools throughout Saint Lucia.

It said that the Department of Education, Innovation and Gender Relations will continue to engage stakeholders when necessary.

The statement explained that’s because the COVID-19 situation remains ‘very fluid’.
