Pierre: Not The Time To Discuss Leaving The Commonwealth

Amid official mourning following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre said on Monday that it was not the time to discuss leaving the Commonwealth.

“At this time Saint Lucia is part of the Commonwealth and this is not a discussion we can have at this time,” Pierre stated.

“This time is a time when we are mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth,” was Pierre’s response when reporters asked whether this country would remain part of the Commonwealth or move towards becoming a Republic.

The Castries East MP spoke on the sidelines of a meeting of the Cabinet after signing a book of condolence at Government House.

He expressed ‘deep and sincere’ condolences on the death of the Queen, observing that the late Monarch was part of Saint Lucia’s history.

“We were moved by her grace, her professionalism and we deeply mourn her death,” the Saint Lucia Prime Minister stated.

“We also want to congratulate the new King – King Charles III,” Pierre told reporters, adding that the king is well-known for his advocacy on matters about youth and the environment.

“I had the pleasure to speak with him earlier this year and we hope he will continue in the fine tradition of his mother,” he said.

Pierre’s remarks came on the heels of reports that Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne had announced that he intended to introduce a referendum on whether his country should become a republic following Queen Elizabeth’s death.

The BBC quoted Browne as saying that a referendum could take place within three years – but emphasised that the move was ‘not an act of hostility’.

According to the BBC, he made the comments after confirming Charles III as King and head of state of the Caribbean nation.

  1. Biggest shame st lucia has mate as a pm nonsense talk alone nothing making sense..some lucians are so hatred against one man they elect a margee for their pm what a big shame for st.lucia

    • The guys busy looking after their campaign sponsors. Yall will continue to suck salt. Chas and friends did it, now is pierre and company turn. And the cycle will continue.

  2. Mr Pierre please I am begging on behalf of all Marigot people, red or yellow please sir have Dr Hilaire to repair our roads. If Rayneau cannot keep up with the amount of work he has, please give to to another contractor. Mr Pierre 5 years is not 50 years. Don’t come and do things the last year. It will be too late.

    • Yes and finish St Jude highway in Vieux fort as well as the La Ressource road leading to the wonderful horse track. How they expect us to race horses in the south?

  3. The Fox well said black people need to stop blaming the white man for their shortcomings take for example who is creating the problems in Haiti at moment? Who is killing each other in the African nations? Who is causing all the past shootings in St Lucia ? Well the last time I checked it was not the white man.

    • Yeah b/c the white left the poverty he created for you all to fix and made sure to create the road barriers so you won’t fix the problem. You obviously no nothing about world history else you would have the understanding that the United States has done everything to destroy Haiti. But racist Fox News is what you getting your info from.

  4. Why try to fix what’s not broken. Pierre is smart it won’t make St Lucia any better. Firstly by doing move face on the money need to change, name of the police force need to change and many more. Who will implement the new names Pierre? And when Uwp came in power to change it St Lucia have to much corruption to make such move.

  5. My dear Prime Minister, this is one time I agree with your statement – this is not the time to talk about leaving the commonwealth – or rush to do the same as others; there is no benefit in declaring to go for Republicanism, this is a time in our history when we cannot afford any focus on our domestic affairs: don’t shake the boat/what has been happening is not good to hear; please concentrate on the development aspects, jobs, nursing school, health care, agriculture most of all, ‘wipe out crime’ if we can achieve that, then that’s the victory no one can argue with. Be mindful we have to be wise, let us call on the Lord above for His help. Amen.

    • Why are we even discussing withdrawing from the Commonwealth? This is not an issue. Has any of our Caribbean republics withdrawn from the Commonwealth? Aren’t Dominica, Barbados, Guyana members of the Commonwealth? Clearly graduating to republican status is not the same thing as withdrawing from the Commonwealth. Let’s please get this much clear.

      Dancea.

    • The lord didn’t help you’ll when the white man was enslaving you’ll. But now he come down from helping the white beat you at every game for the last centuries. God lives the white man so much he has Saint Lucians believing that they need the white man to save them.

  6. In the last few months this year we have experienced a crime wave, never imagined in my wildest dreams, never thought St. Lucia could fall so low. Along with Covid, Monkey pox etc your Tourist Industry have taken a hit, we do not know yet what is next. There’s been too much yapping on Slavery, white man did this, we want money, we are from Ethiopia, Jah said this that and the other. Pjp better start finding work for people or he is in big trouble. May all Lucians be Blessed,

  7. I agree with the PM. King Charles III’s role as our sovereign is purely symbolic, it’s not worth all the fuss disposing him at this time as it does nothing to fix our current situation nor develop our country. The will come however when we get our house in order.

  8. Pierre has No Balls. I am not surprise he said what ever he did. The time will never be right for him and I do not expect him to initiate such a conversation. All he can do is make empty promises even after he is PM.

  9. Does the PM know you can become a Republic but still be part of the commonwealth? Is this guy the prime minister? Does he know what he is talking about? I am lost for words and lost all hope….

    • All the PM said on Monday was “that it was not the time to discuss leaving the Commonwealth”. Why is that so difficult to understand?
