Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, currently in Mexico for the VI Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), has described the meeting agenda as being ‘critical’ in view of the current COVID-19 global pandemic.
Seventeen leaders and multiple senior officials from thirty-one countries were down to attend the gathering.
Pierre, who left Saint Lucia on Thursday for the Mexico City event that was scheduled to start on Saturday, explained on his official Facebook page that regional leaders will discuss COVID-19, health self-sufficiency, economic recovery, and international cooperation that will position Latin America and the Caribbean as major players on the global stage.
“I had previously stated that I would not be attending the Summit and was making arrangements to do so virtually. However, it is an in-person meeting with an agenda that is critical in assisting with this global pandemic,” Pierre explained.
“I wish you all a safe weekend. Please follow the operating protocols; they only work if you do,” he wrote.
The Saint Lucia Prime Minister is due back home on Monday and in his absence, Castries South MP and Minister of Tourism, Investment, Creative Industries, Culture and Information, Dr. Ernest Hilaire, has been appointed Acting Prime Minister.
