Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet, has officially welcomed Cuba’s new ambassador to this country.
His Excellency Alejandro Simancas Marin succeeds Jorge Francisco Soberon Luis.
“I look forward to Ambassador Marin to continuing the fantastic work commenced by his predecessor,” Prime Minister Chastanet wrote on his official Facebook page.
He noted that Saint Lucia recently signed co-operative agreements with Cuba in the areas of Agriculture and Education.
Saint Lucia officially established diplomatic relations with Cuba on August 23rd, 1979.
According to the Prime Minister, in 1999, the Saint Lucia-Cuba Joint Commission was established, with the aim of promoting co-operative relations between the 2 countries in economic, social, cultural and technological fields.
He wrote on his Facebook page that the Commission also aims to assist in facilitating a greater understanding of each other’s views and positions on issues of mutual interest in the various regional and international fora.
The previous Cuban Ambassador, Jorge Francisco Soberon Luis,was awarded the Saint Lucia Medal of Honour (Gold) of the Order of Saint Lucia before he left here.
Governor General, Sir Emmanuel Neville Cenac, bestowed the honour on the Cuban diplomat on the advice of Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet, for the ambassador’s ‘significant contribution’ to this country’s development.
The special investiture ceremony was held on December 6, 2018.
