Prime Minister Allen Chastanet has congratulated her excellency Tsai Ing-wen on her re-election as President of Taiwan.
“On behalf of the Government and People of Saint Lucia, I extend hearty congratulations to a wonderful friend of Saint Lucia, President of Taiwan- Her Excellency Tsai Ing-wen on her re-election as President of the Republic of China (Taiwan),” Chastanet wrote Saturday on his official Facebook page.
“As a country, we remain extremely grateful for the many projects and vast assistance which Taiwan provides to Saint Lucia and I look forward to the continued strengthening of cooperation and relations between our two countries during your new term,” he said.
President Tsai secured a second term after sweeping to victory in an election dominated by the island’s relationship with China.
According to the BBC, Ms Tsai secured just over 57% of the ballot – a record 8.2m votes – well ahead of her rival Han Kuo-yu.
Ms Tsai opposes closer ties with China, with Mr Han suggesting they would bring economic benefits.
In her victory speech, Ms Tsai told China to abandon its threat to take back the island by force.
The Taiwanese leader paid an official visit to Saint Lucia in July last year.
The visit was the final leg of her Journey of Freedom, Democracy, Sustainability that also included stops in Haiti, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
While here, President Tsai met and held discussions with Prime Minister Chastanet and other local officials.
She said then that strong and friendly relations between Taiwan and this country are underscored by increasing exchanges in areas spanning agriculture, education, information and communication technology, infrastructure and medicine.
