Prime Minister Allen Chastanet says rehabilitating the former Daher Mall building will create new jobs both during construction and in the longer term afterwards.
In addition, he said the project will help the government to reduce rental costs.
And Chastanet also noted that the project will help decentralise government services from primarily being in Castries.
“If you’ve driven to or from Gros Islet over the last few days, you would have noticed that rehabilitation work is currently ongoing on the Amazona Properties Ltd building (the former Daher Mall) in Bois D’Orange,” he wrote on his official Facebook page.
According to Chastanet, the government has entered into a Public Private Partnership (PPP) with an investor to deliver on the project.
“As part of this PPP, we have sold the ground floor of the building to the investor,” he explained.
But Chastanet said the government will maintain ownership of the two top floors.
The PM stated that upon completion, the facility will house a supermarket, a bank, restaurants, various shops and Government offices.
“We are also in negotiations with new call centres,” he revealed.
Chastanet said the centres have expressed an interest in expanding and moving their operations to Saint Lucia.
“This is a win win situation for the Government and people of Saint Lucia,” the PM asserted.
He said it’s because more economic activity will develop in the location and will help enhance the community.
