Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet, is encouraging more involvement by Saint Lucians in honey production.
Writing on his offficial Facebook page, Chastanet said it is estimated that there are approximately 3000 beehives in Saint Lucia, with the highest concentration of Beekeepers being in the Mabouya Valley.
“Under the BAM (Banana Accompanying Measures) Project, Mille Fleurs which is the umbrella body for Beekeepers on the island has been allocated space at the La Caye IRDC,” he observed.
Chastanet noted that BAM has retrofitted the building to house Mille Fleurs bottling operations and office space.
He disclosed that Bam will also procure equipment for Mille Fleurs’ bottling operations.
“I am in agreement with Past President of Mille Fleurs, Mr. William Antoine that beekeeping can make a serious dent on unemployment especially in our rural communities. Some of the advantages of honey production is that it is a non-perishable product, less price sensitive and more sustainable over the long term,” the PM wrote.
