Saint Lucia police have seized 50 illegal guns and hundreds of ‘articles’ of ammunition so far for the year 2020.
The disclosure comes from police spokeswoman, Anne Joseph.
Joseph told the National Television Network (NTN) Tuesday that the illegal weapons and ammunition were recovered by various police units and stations across Saint Lucia.
According to the police spokeswoman, of the 50 illegal weapons that the police seized, 22 were recovered by the Drug Unit.
Joseph explained that the Drug Unit, in collaboration with other branches of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, spearheaded 319 operations and executed 74 warrants on various premises.
“They resulted in the seizure of 504 articles of ammunition – also 24 persons were arrested from these operations,” she noted.
Joseph disclosed that police seized 321 kilogrammes of cannabis, 33 grams of cannabis resin, 8.827 kilogrammes of cocaine and 6 grammes of crack.
She also said that for 2020, Saint Lucia has so far recorded 21 homicides.
“Out of that number we have 13 of them being dealt with. Nine of these have resulted in arrests – these matters are currently before the court and two of them are pending the inquest process and nine are before the criminal court,” the police spokeswoman stated.
Joseph said over the last two weeks, the Marine Police seized three vessels in relation to various offences including the possession of controlled substances.
