Saint Lucia police stepped in Tuesday to stop a Carnival style ‘jump up’ at Baron’s Drive, Soufriere, it has been reported.

Members of the Special Service Unit (SSU) ordered those in attendance to disperse, a law enforcement official told St Lucia Times.

According to Soufriere residents, before dispersing the residents pranced along the Baron’s Drive road to the sound of music blaring from at least one vehicle carrying large speakers.

One video posted on social media shows a crowd of people jumping up and chanting in unison: ‘We want jump up!’

Multiple sources indicated that the ‘jump up’ started from before noon and went on for some time before the police intervened.

A Soufriere resident estimated that some 100 people were present.

The current COVID-19 global pandemic and the need to observe physical distancing to stop the spread of the virus forced the cancellation of this year’s Saint Lucia Carnival.
