PM promises to bring down unemployment

Prime Minister Doctor Kenny Anthony has promised that in the next five years a Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) administration will bring unemployment down to fifteen percent and below.

Anthony made the announcement during a political meeting of the SLP last night on the Castries Market steps.

He said unemployment continues to be the number one problem.

“You can be comforted by the fact that this labour party took unemployment from a high of 24.5 and brought down to 20 percent,” Anthony told the crowd.

He asserted that the SLP government had brought unemployment down by five percentage points this term.

“So if we brought it down by five to bring it down by another five percent is in our grasp,” the Prime Minister declared.

He said unemployment will continue to be the SLP’s number one priority.

Anthony explained that the promised reduction in the jobless rate will be achieved through a combination of measures.

“We are going to have more government financed construction,” he asserted.

Anthony said there would be more investment, adding that the plan is to construct no less than 2000 new hotel rooms in this country.

He observed that already for this five years some 900 rooms will be built in a time of hardship.

“As this economy picks up and galvanizes, we believe not only can we bring that unemployment rate down to fifteen percent, we can bring investment that can construct two thousand rooms to provide work to our people,” the Prime Minister stated.

He repeated his dream of opening up the East Coast of Saint Lucia, explaining that there was a “wilderness” along that area.

Anthony said his government is pledging to the people of Saint Lucia that it will construct a highway from Gros Islet to Dennery South.

He disclosed that a consultancy has already been done by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

“For us that will be the number two priority – to change the face of this country and open up our East Coast that is so uninhabited, to new development and new opportunity,” Anthony declared.
