Prudent backs Castries redevelopment, balks at demolition of parliament

The leader of the Lucian Peoples Movement (LPM), Therold Prudent, has come out in support of the redevelopment planned for Castries.

But he has expressed his opposition to plans to demolish the parliament building in the process.

“I am not the kind of person to go against any development, especially if it is anything that will uplift a particular locality as in the case of Castries,” Prudent told St Lucia Times.

He explained that as the capital of Saint Lucia, the environment must be created in Castries where locals and visitors will be impressed by the city’s beauty.

However the LPM leader declared that although he supports the government’s effort to uplift the capital and change the face of what he described as “an eyesore”, he does not agree with Prime Minister Allen Chastanet’s plan to “mess” with historical buildings that give Castries its unique look.

Prudent made reference to the British parliament and the United States Congress, asserting that attempts are made to enhance those buildings.

“They do not attempt to destroy and completely break down,” he asserted.

“In my view Allen Chastanet does not have the respect or he does not appreciate the value of those buildings and their historical and sentimental aspects,” the LPM leader told St Lucia Times.

“I as much as we want a beautiful Island and a beautiful capital, it is worth preserving what’s there – preserving or at least repairing or beautifying the structures that give us our history.”

  1. Demolish ALL the CDC buildings and let them people go live in their person al homes. Leave the damn Parliament building and other historic buildings alone. This man just thinks he can destroy our history just like that? Is he funky crazy. We will demolish him and his cabinet

  2. true.. i was saying the same thing because some of these people have their own personal house and just occupying the space in Castries. These buildings are of no use

  3. I strongly support the demolition of all the CDC buildings, to me they are of no use. The government can use these areas for good business places for our foreigners.

    • How will you house all those people Josito? Is there any real demand for business real estate? Do you see the number of new empty buildings in Castries? Do you realise St. Lucia’s population growth has leveled out? Thank God people like you aren’t policy makers.
