The Iyanola Council for the Advancement of Rastafari (ICAR), has condemned as ‘unacceptable’, Sunday morning’s arson attack on the Catholic Church at Pierrot, Vieux Fort.
No one was reported injured in the attack in which a man set fire to a statue outside the building and was held by parishioners as he later entered the place of worship.
The man was subsequently handed over to the police.
“ICAR stands for equal rights and justice and everyone has a right to worship in whatever way and form that they choose, as long as they are not infringing on the civil liberties of other persons,” ICAR President, Aaron Alexander told St Lucia Times.
“When incidents like that happen it makes us reflect on ourselves as a community that in our own place of worship, what if something like that were to happen perpetrated by other persons? We would definitely not accept such behaviour,” the ICAR President asserted.
He said ICAR cannot accept the attack perpetrated against people in their place of worship who were not disturbing anyone.
“This is totally wrong,” Alexander declared.
He disclosed that the Rastafarian teachings from Haile Selassie urge members of the faith to live side by side and co-exist with persons of other faiths.
“That is what we live by and that is what we follow,” Alexander told St Lucia Times.
