Residents of Bois Patat have said that armed men are terrorizing their neighbourhood, striking fear in the hearts of persons in the community.
The residents told the Times that in one of the latest incidents last week Thursday night, a young man was shot in the leg as men with guns opened fire on him.
The victim is reported to have been standing in the balcony of the house when he was shot.
Stray bullets penetrated the wooden building.
“We were just cooling out having something to eat and we heard numerous gunshots firing – we just saw glass exploding and the lights went off because they shoot the wire, so people started taking cover in the house,” an occupant of the building who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Times.
He said among the persons in the house at the time was a young child.
The occupant of the house said the gunmen came with intentions to do harm.
“They came for us,” he declared.
He said he believes the same men are responsible for provoking other residents of Bois Patat, making threatening gestures and issuing death threats to people.
“That is just how they operate,” the Bois Patat resident told the Times.
“Nobody don’t interfere with those guys, they don’t look at them because those guys are just looking for trouble,” he said.
Two other residents who spoke with the Times said persons in the community are being repeatedly harassed and robbed by armed bandits.
One woman said that as a result, some persons have moved out of the community.
She pointed to two houses in upper Bois Patat which she said have been vacated by terrified tenants.
She recalled that a nurse who was attacked by armed men had her finger broken and her belongings stolen.
The woman told the Times that there was need for the authorities to do something to stop criminals from terrorizing residents.
