Results of Independence Rugby Sevens

The inaugural Independence Rugby Sevens Tournament held on 25 February 2017 at the La Clery Playing Field did not disappoint. The tournament marked the official opening of the rugby season on the island. The Saint Lucia Rugby Football Union hosted the one day tournament as a start of a jam packed 2017 calendar of activities.
The absence of female teams in the tournament was apparent but the male teams’ performance more than made up for it. The three competing clubs were Rogues Rugby Club, VBCC Stingers Rugby and Whiptail Warriors Rugby Club. Old and new players showcased their athletic prowess as they went head to head in the double round robin format. VBCC Stingers placed third while Whiptail Warriors Rugby Club secured the second place. The stellar performance of Rogues Rugby Club was admirable considering this was the first tournament for the Club. Team captain Ervin Joseph was also the top scorer for the team.
Saint Lucia Rugby Football Union continues to move forward in developing the sport on the island. Aside from bringing the sport to the various communities, the Union is also planning to start school age rugby programs.
