Barbados born pop star Rihanna has blasted President Donald Trump, suggesting that he may be “the most mentally ill human being in America”, multiple media reports say.
According to the reports, the 31 year old singer was responding to comments the US leader made after recent mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.
Following the El Paso shooting, Trump tweeted that the “hateful” attack was “an act of cowardice.”
“Mental illness and hatred pulls the trigger — not the gun,” he is also quoted as having said.
The El Paso shooter allegedly wrote a racist manifesto that railed against immigrants.
Rihanna, in an interview with Vogue Magazine, asserted that if an Arab man with the same weapon was in the same Walmart, Trump would not have addressed the shooting publicly as a mental health problem.
“The most mentally ill human being in America right now seems to be the president,” the singer, whose real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, told the magazine.
“It is devastating. People are being murdered by war weapons that they legally purchase. This is just not normal. That should never, ever be normal,”she stated.
“And the fact that it’s classified as something different because of the colour of their skin? It’s a slap in the face. It’s completely racist.”
During the Vogue interview Rihanna confirmed she had turned down a Super Bowl performance to show solidarity with Colin Kaepernick.
The former NFL player kneeled during the national anthem as a silent sideline protest against police brutality and racial injustice and was roundly criticised by President Trump, among others.
Rihanna in explaining her decision not to perform at the Super Bowl said that she could not be a ‘sellout’ and an ‘enabler.’
